12% of motorists 'have never checked tyre tread depth'

17th June 2010

More than one in ten drivers are risking having to make a claim on their car insurance by not checking their tyre tread depths, mytyres.co.uk has suggested.

The website revealed that 12 per cent of motorists in the UK have never checked their tyre tread depths and one in five only check them occasionally.

It is illegal to drive in the UK with tyres that have less than 1.6mm of tread and, by disobeying this, motorists face a £2,500 fine and three penalty points on their licence.

Driving with balding tyres increases the possibility of an accident, particularly when it is wet, according to the website.

Mytyres.co.uk advised motorists to check and adjust their tyre pressures against the recommendation listed in the owner's handbook.

The site also recommended having a vehicle's steering alignment checked if its front tyres show signs of excessive or uneven wear.

Last month, Micheldever Tyres Services revealed that over 80 per cent of cars which come into its flagship outlet in Hampshire have badly worn tyres, with a tread depth below 2mm.
