15% of UK drivers 'have skipped routine servicing'

18th May 2010

Some 15 per cent of UK drivers have postponed or skipped routine servicing in an attempt to save cash, recent research has revealed.

The study, conducted by YouGov for the Ford Motor Company, also revealed that 18 per cent of these motorists did not have any breakdown cover.

Over a third (35 per cent) of those likely to possess young driver insurance (motorists aged 18 to 24) were found to not have cover, followed by 28 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds.

Mike Weatherston, group service marketing manager at Hendy Ford, said: "It's a story we hear often but while trying to avoid the cost, many of these drivers could regret skipping basic maintenance and roadside cover."

Earlier this month, Kwik-Fit revealed that 35 per cent of car insurance customers service their own vehicles.

They calculated that this could mean there are 1.25 million vehicles on the UK's roads which have been poorly serviced by DIY mechanics.
