A full service history 'adds hundreds to the value of a used car'

7th July 2010

Car insurance customers can take a number of steps to reduce the amount that their vehicles depreciate by, British Car Auctions (BCA) has claimed.

Motorists should make sure they maintain their car properly, preferably with the supplying dealer.

The BCA explained that a full service history can add hundreds of pounds to the value of a used car.

Something that could devalue a vehicle, however, is modifying it, the auctioneers warned.

"Non-factory paint schemes and retro-fitted body kits limit your market of potential buyers, while 'chipping' the engine might even void the car's warranty," explained Tim Naylor, spokesperson for the BCA.

The firm also advised motorists choosing a factory finish to avoid flat, matt colours as they can "look tired" very quickly.

According to DuPont's Color Popularity Report, published at the end of last year, the favoured car colour in the US was silver, followed by black, white and grey.
