Budget cuts 'could impact on road safety'

23rd June 2010

A leading charity has suggested measures in the emergency Budget could impact on the safety of car insurance customers as they travel on the UK's roads.

Brake has revealed it is concerned over plans to cut money related to motoring issues including engineering works, as well as funds used to support local authority-led road safety partnerships.

According to the body, such moves could impact on the safety of the UK's roads, which in turn may affect the cost of car insurance premiums.

Ellen Booth, campaigns officer for Brake, said the body intends to discuss the issue when it meets up with road safety minister Mike Penning in the near future.

She added: "The government has, by making the cuts to road safety spending so large, sent a very powerful message to local authorities that life saving work in road safety is not important at all."

Recent figures from Brake suggested that almost three-quarters of drivers admit to driving at 35mph or faster in a 30mph zone.
