Flood risks prompt advice for drivers
20th November 2009
With more flooding predicted in the UK over the next few days, car insurance customers have been given a few tips on staying safe and dry from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
If it is absolutely necessary to drive through water, the IAM advises driving in the highest section of the road and not setting off if a vehicle is travelling in the opposite direction.
Additionally, motorists were told the taken their foot off the accelerator even slightly while submerged will allow water to travel up the exhaust pipe.
Finally, it was recommended that drivers always test their brakes for a few seconds after coming out of deep water.
"If the journey is unavoidable, motorists should take extra precautions when dealing with severe surface conditions," commented Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner.
"Torrential rain brings with it visibility problems as the car mists up in seconds."
Recently, the IAM reminded car insurance customers that satnavs should be used as an "aid" to navigational abilities, not a replacement for them.
