IAM advice for those with stuck accelerators

4th February 2010

As Toyota recalls millions of cars due to safety concerns over their accelerator pedals, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice to car insurance customers on dealing with an engineering malfunction.

While Toyota has been keen to point out that there have been no reported problems in the UK or Europe with the braking performance of the current, third-generation Prius, the issue has made some drivers more wary.

Stephen Mead, IAM assistant chief examiner, said that the most important thing to do if an accelerator pedal sticks is to keep calm.

"Press the brake firmly, then the clutch, disengaging the power," he advised.

"In an automatic, drivers should brake, wait for a reaction from the vehicle and then put the car into neutral. You can still steer, too, so a stuck accelerator isn't actually the disaster it sounds."

Car insurance customers should then find a safe place to stop before seeking help, Mr Mead added.
