IAM issues advice for pregnant drivers
4th March 2010
Car insurance customers with a baby on the way have been given some advice on how to drive safely and comfortably from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
The organisation has reminded motorists that the law still requires pregnant women to wear a seatbelt - this will not harm the baby and in fact reduces the risk of injury by up to 70 per cent in the event of a crash.
"It seems obvious, but we do urge pregnant women to keep wearing their seatbelts while driving," commented IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger.
"The steering wheel hitting the abdomen is the main danger for pregnant drivers in a collision and the seatbelt is the only thing stopping the driver flying forward."
IAM has recommended that pregnant women wear the lap strap as low as possible below the bump and that they adjust the fit to be as snug as is comfortably possible.
Last month, the institute warned that too many car insurance customers are still risking lives by using mobile phones while driving.
