IAM: Take care on country roads this bank holiday

24th May 2010

Car insurance customers are being urged by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) to take care on country roads this bank holiday weekend.

The institute warned that crashes on rural roads are often more serious as they can be unfamiliar and hold many hidden risks.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at IAM, said: "The lush grass at this time of year makes it particularly difficult to see around bends, so take corners with extra care."

He went on to advise motorists to "be prepared" as there are lots of wild animals "tearing about" in the countryside at the moment.

Drivers were also urged to look out for bikers, as more than three quarters of motorcycle deaths and injuries happen on dry roads in fine weather.

Earlier this month, a road safety campaign was launched across the whole of Yorkshire and Humber to encourage car insurance customers to look out for bikers.

West Yorkshire authorities along with Safer Roads Humber and the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership are funding and promoting the campaign.
