Michelin reveals 36 per cent of drivers have dangerous tyres
13th November 2009
More than one third of car insurance customers in the UK could be driving around with dangerous or under-inflated tyres, according to research from Michelin.
The tyre manufacturer's Fill Up With Air campaign, which visited 24 cities including Dundee, Manchester and Birmingham, offered motorists a free tyre pressure check and top-up.
Of the 4,500 cars checked during the three-month campaign, just 34 per cent were found to have correctly inflated tyres, while a worrying six per cent were driving with punctures.
Michelin's head of communications Peter Snelling warned that trying to save money by avoiding tyre checks is a "false economy".
"Incorrectly inflated tyres, bald tyres and damaged tyres are dangerous and can lead to fatal crashes and lives must not be sacrificed for the sake of saving a few pounds," he added.
Michelin is offering car insurance customers free fuel vouchers when buying a set of four tyres under November 30th.
