Motorists 'do not know enough about safety technology'
9th July 2010
Motorists need to know more about the latest technology in order to avoid having to make claims on their car insurance and to reduce the number of casualties on the road, RoadSafe has suggested.
The organisation claimed that improved electronic safety technology has led to a decline in the severity of road accidents, but added that most car owners are unaware of these systems.
Adrian Walsh, director of RoadSafe, said: "People must be better informed of … eSafety technologies, so they can demand them when buying a vehicle."
One such system is electronic stability control, known as ESC, which helps to stop a vehicle from skidding.
Mr Walsh went on to say that, as these technologies save lives, it is important for car magazine editors and dealers to make sure motorists know about them.
Last month, the Department for Transport revealed that the number of people killed in road accidents in the UK fell by 12 per cent between 2008 and 2009, decreasing from 2,538 to 2,222.
