New Ford technology to cut car insurance claims?

12th April 2010

A new technology that can be seen in the Ford S-Max and Galaxy could, potentially, reduce the number of car insurance claims made as it can prevent collisions on the roads.

Ford's Blind Spot Information System detects when a vehicle is in the Ford's blind spot areas.

When a vehicle is detected, an LED warning light illuminates in the relevant wing mirror to warn the driver of the motorbike, car or lorry's presence.

Dr Torsten Wey, Ford's driver assistance technologies supervisor, explained that, in busy traffic, it can be easy to lose sight of vehicles as they move in and out of the blind spots of other cars.

"With its distinctive warning light, this system helps drivers to think twice before switching lanes or changing direction without checking their blind spot, hopefully preventing a collision or a near miss," he said.

Car insurance customers will be able to get their hands on the S-Max and the Galaxy, which features a re-designed front section with a more sculptured bonnet and a lower trapezoidal grille, this month when they go on sale in the UK.
