Over 30% of cheap car insurance customers 'have illegal tyres'
25th May 2010
More than 30 per cent of motorists are putting themselves at risk of having to claim on their cheap car insurance by driving with at least one illegal tyre.
This is according to research conducted by Micheldever Tyres Services, which also found that over 80 per cent of cars that come into the company's flagship outlet in Hampshire have badly worn tyres, with a tread depth below 2 mm.
The legal minimum tread depth for tyres is 1.6 mm, but many organisations and companies, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, recommend that they are replaced before treads reach 3 mm.
Paul Fox, chief executive of Micheldever Tyres Services, said: "The reality is that delaying the replacement of badly worn tyres is a false economy that places drivers, their passengers and other road users at serious risk."
Cheap car insurance customers can get their tyres checked for free at any of the 49 Micheldever/Protyre outlets across the UK.
