Protyre: Avoid car insurance claims by checking tyre condition
12th July 2010
Motorists can avoid accidents and subsequent claims on their cheap car insurance if they check their tyres are safe before hitting the roads this summer, Protyre has suggested.
The company claims that car owners can also reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions if they ensure their tyres are correctly inflated and have an adequate amount of grip.
"Insufficient tread depth greatly increases stopping distances particularly in the wet. The penalty for having an illegal tyre could mean a £2,500 fine and three penalty points on a drivers licence," a statement from Protyre said.
It went on to state that tyres older than eight years should be replaced even if they seem to have more than the required 1.6mm of tread, as they are more susceptible to punctures.
Although the weather is good at the moment, it could well take a turn for the worse over the holiday period, so Daniel Collins, writing on lonad.com, has advised motorists to replace their windscreen wipers if they are old or worn.
