RAC Foundation calls for improvement in parking regulations

25th November 2009

Car insurance customers have been given a hand in avoiding parking fines after the RAC Foundation published research detailing the income from parking enforcement collected by all UK councils.

While income from parking fines has fallen overall compared to figures from 2007-08, the RAC Foundation has found a number of local authorities that have collected more.

The organisation believes that council should be obliged to investigate why parking fine incomes have risen in an effort to make parking rules and regulations more clear to car insurance customers.

"Councils should look more creatively at ways to accommodate motorists who want to support their community and do not want to drive to large out of town shopping malls," commented Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation.

Last month, the foundation urged transport minister Sadiq Khan to promise to regulate the activities of rogue wheel clampers, including the introduction of a mandatory code of conduct for those in parking enforcement.
