Road safety charity 'appalled by govt cuts'

27th July 2010

Brake has said it is appalled by the government's cuts, which have put a stop to programmes that keep car insurance customers safe on the roads.

The coalition government has cut the road safety grant provided to local authorities by 40 per cent.

Brake explained that this grant funds the installation and maintenance of speed cameras, pedestrian crossings and 20mph zones.

The money also goes towards re-educating offenders, who could well be seeking convicted driver car insurance.

Brake's deputy chief executive Julie Townsend said: "We are horrified that vital road safety work is grinding to a halt as a result of draconian funding cuts made by the government."

She went on to say that the cuts could undo the progress that has been made in reducing the number of "tragic, needless and costly" road deaths and injuries in the UK.

Earlier in the month, the European Commission adopted the Road Safety Programme 2011-2020, which aims to cut the number of road deaths in Europe in half.
