Electric car sales plummet

4th December 2008

It seems the public is questioning the advantages of electric cars as statistics reveal that sales have dropped by 58 per cent in 2008.

Cleangreencars.co.uk revealed that there were just 156 cars sold from January to October 2008, compared with 374 over the same time period last year.

The company has suggested that that City of London's decision not to grant free parking for electric cars could well have had something to do with the dip in sales.

Richard Bremner, editor at cleangreencars.co.uk suggested a possible reason for the fall in demand. He said: "Buyers could be holding off for cars from mainstream manufacturers, although they may still have years to wait before mass production is a reality.”

Other possible reasons for the lack of interest in electric cars include Ken Livingstone's proposals to exempt sub-120 g/km CO2 petrol and diesel cars from the congestion charge.

Even though the proposals were subsequently rejected by Boris Johnson, Cleengreencars.co.uk suggests that some potential buyers had already made the decision not to buy electric.

Low emissions cars could save consumers on car insurance.
