European-wide drink drive campaign

3rd December 2008

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) will be working in conjunction with Volvo Trucks to conduct a Europe wide anti-drink and drive campaign.

Safe and Sober is a campaign that aims to promote sobriety in traffic at all levels and there has been a summit meeting that includes a number of key players in the industry.

Alcolock was at the summit to promote its system that prevents motorists from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Drivers have to blow into a nozzle before turning the key.

Volvo Trucks supports the use alcolocks and was the first manufacturer to fit them as an option on its vehicles in 2005.

Commenting on alcolocks, Lennart Pilskog, Volvo Trucks’ director of public affairs, said: "The technology is here and it is easy to use. Blowing into a nozzle before turning the key is no more awkward than putting on your safety belt."

Another reason not to drink and drive is to avoid getting points on a license and thereby keeping the price of car insurance policies down.

Under a Privilege proposal recently submitted to MPs backed by over half (55 per cent) of all drivers surveyed, the fitting of a breath testing device to the ignition of a convicted drink driver’s vehicle would be compulsory for at least six months following the completion of a ban for drink driving.ADNFCR-1784-ID-18910162-ADNFCR
