Funding allocated to highway asset management

2nd December 2008

The department for transport has issued £9 million to the Highways Authorities to help them better maintain their roads, bridges and other public assets.

According to transport minister Paul Clark, the funding will accompany the £23 million that was set aside earlier this year.

As well as ensuring the quality of roads, the money will help councils to manage their streetlights and traffic lights, making for safer roads.

Better lighting means fewer accidents at night, while vans and cars will also suffer from less wear and tear on properly managed and maintained roads. As such, this scheme could help drivers in affected areas to benefit from cheap car insurance.

Paul Clark said: "High quality local highways are vital to communities; connecting people with work, shops, services, families and friends."

Last week, the Institute of Advanced Motorists urged drivers to ensure that they only drive when absolutely necessary as the weather begins to worsen this month.ADNFCR-1784-ID-18907817-ADNFCR
