One in five accidents involve parked cars
7th July 2008
Over £1.25 billion of damage is caused every year as a result of parking accidents, according to new research by an accident management specialist.
Accident Exchange estimated that 700,000 motorists collide with parked cars every year - which account for one in five of all reported road accidents - leaving innocent UK drivers with an annual bill of £1.25 billion and an increase in car insurance premiums.
London topped the twenty five worst cities in Britain for parked car incidents - with ten per cent of all crashes reported in the capital - followed by Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and Norwich.
Steve Evans, chief executive of Accident Exchange believes that the problem is only set to get worse.
He said: "The number of vehicles on Britains roads has swelled by almost ten million over the past decade, leaving 35 million motorists competing for an estimated 2.2 million car park spaces today."
The number of people killed in road accidents fell by seven per cent in 2007 - down from 3,172 to 2,943.
