Car scrappage scheme 'boosts green car sales'

21st August 2009

The government's car scrappage scheme has boosted green vehicle sales, young driver car insurance customers may be interested to learn.

Orders for cars which have been built to cut down on CO2 emissions have reached close to 155,000 since the start of the scheme in April, according to WhatGreenCar.

The average CO2 emissions for a scrapped car is 179g per kilometre, compared to an average of 134g/km for those purchased through the scheme, reflecting a reduction equivalent to 70g/km of fuel.

WhatGreenCar's Dr Ben Lane said: "Following the fuel hikes of 2008 and the ensuing 'credit crunch', UK car buyers were already looking for smaller, more fuel-efficient models.

"The scrappage scheme has helped to continue this trend, at a time when UK car sales were at an all time low."

Regional breakdowns at the halfway point of the scheme, published earlier this month by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, show that the scheme has helped contribute to a 13.5 per cent jump in car manufacturing growth in the UK.

The scheme has seen its highest uptake in the south-east, while the north and south-west regions recorded uptake of 11 per cent each.
