Congestion charge challenge a success
4th August 2009
Volvo Car UK is reporting success in its efforts to secure a review of the congestion charge for car insurance customers in London.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has agreed to look again at the exemption for alternative fuel vehicles which, according to Volvo, unfairly favours hybrid cars over other low-emitting vehicles.
The exemption was introduced to encourage car insurance customers to choose a greener vehicle, but Mr Johnson has conceded that there have been further developments in eco-friendly technology since it was announced.
Transport for London will review the exemption and report its recommendations by the end of the year.
A poll conducted by What Car? has found that half of over 1,500 car insurance customers believe that any congestion charge exemption should be based on CO2 emissions rather than whether a vehicle uses electric power.
In June Volvo announced a joint project with Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall to produce battery-powered vehicles featuring plug-in hybrid technology.
