Don't 'leaf' autumn car safety checks too late

15th October 2009

Motorists are being urged to take a few minutes to check their vehicles are fit for purpose this autumn.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning that falling leaves can not only cause havoc for train users but also cause problems for drivers.

Dying leaves can have a "devastating effect" on the electronics of many modern cars, it points out.

To ensure their cars stay in good working order throughout the season, drivers should clear any leaves or debris from the plenum chambers - the tray-like area under the bonnet, just below the windscreen, the body advises.

Leaves can block up the drains in this area, trapping water which can damage the computer systems and mist up windows.

Drivers should also check the battery is in good condition, as cold weather can shorten its life, the IAM continues.

Established more than 50 years ago, the IAM offers advanced driving courses to road users, to help them stay safe when driving and reduce their car insurance costs.
