Motorists 'must make small changes' to improve driving efficiency

2nd March 2010

Motorists taking out young drivers car insurance could find that being able to drive efficiently may soon be another contributing factor to their motor insurance.

A report issued by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) as part of its ongoing climate change campaign, proposes that demonstrating driving in an energy efficient way should be made a major criteria for passing a practical driving test.

Alongside the government's attempts to reduce carbon emission, the CBI has developed a report and interactive website aiming to help businesses and consumers cut their vehicle CO2 emissions.

The organisation says if drivers make small changes to the way they drive, such as by reducing the amount of braking and acceleration needed, they will cut fuel consumption.

Dr Neil Bentley, director of business environment at CBI, said: "Making energy-efficient driving techniques part of the test will make a significant contribution to changing the next generation of motorists' behaviour, and to cutting transport emissions."

The CBI hope that the proposals will help get the UK back on track to reaching the government's 2020 targets.
