Motorists urged to hot up summer car care
30th June 2009
Drivers are being advised to take good care of their vehicles this summer in order to keep them in pristine condition.
Car care firm Autoglym warns that strong sunlight can do more damage to paintwork than cold winter weather, increasing the likelihood of fading paint and degradation.
Body panels can reach 50 degrees C, meaning contaminants such as bird droppings or tree sap can eat into paintwork and corrode it, while tyres and rubber seals are also at risk of deterioration in the baking heat.
Drivers apply sun cream to their skin to protect from UV rays and should do the equivalent for their cars, says Autoglym technical director Hemant Patel.
Wax or polish should be used to protect against the sun's rays, dirt removed as quickly as possible and cars washed out of direct sunlight so products do not dry on them, the firm suggests.
The Met Office this week issued a heat wave warning, saying parts of England could reach 30 degrees C during the day and not fall below 18 degrees C at night.
