Nissan hires more staff to cope with scrappage demand

23rd July 2009

Nissan's manufacturing plant in Sunderland is taking on additional staff in order to meet rising demand from car insurance customers taking advantage of the scrappage scheme.

Some 100 new posts will be created, initially as three-month contracts, in addition to the 250 temporary manufacturing jobs announced in May and June.

The manufacturer reports that scrappage schemes operating in countries such as Germany and the UK have seen a rise in demand for Sunderland-built models by an additional 24,000 units compared with the initial production plan.

Trevor Mann, senior vice-president for manufacturing at Nissan, commented that the Micra and Note are proving extremely popular among car insurance customers.

"We are currently experiencing a short-term but significant spike in demand for Sunderland models as a result of scrappage incentive schemes," he added.

Nissan's summer campaign of deals for its customers kicked off last week with a £1,000 discount on the new Pixo compact car.
