Young drivers "more supportive of speed cameras"
5th August 2009
Young car insurance customers are more in favour of speed cameras than their older counterparts, according to new research.
The Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) has conducted a survey of driver opinions on the cameras, finding that 17 to 24-year-olds gave the highest approval ratings, while those over 45 were most likely to complain.
Additionally, the study found that women are more supportive of safety cameras than men and on average commit fewer traffic offences.
Neil Greig, director of research and policy at the IAM, said the survey represents ten years' worth of motoring opinions on this contentious issue.
"Young people don't tend to drive as frequently or as far as the average driver, and they have also grown up in a surveillance society, which could explain why they show less objection to safety cameras," he said.
The IAM recently welcomed Britain's provisional road casualty figures for 2008, which show a reduction of 14 per cent in fatal accidents.
