Security tips for women drivers

Owning a car means freedom and independence but, as a female driver, the issues of personal security and theft should be foremost in your mind. Half a million vehicles are stolen in the UK every year, and many more car owners have their vehicles broken into. These are sobering statistics, but it's not all out of your control - there are a number of things you can do to minimise the risk to yourself and your possessions.

Firstly, there are numerous security features available, either as inbuilt options or separate purchases. These range from central locking and lockable fuel caps, to alarms and electronic engine mobilisation. Some of these products can even save you money on your car insurance premiums. A personal alarm is a good, inexpensive option that can give you peace of mind, especially in areas you don't know well.

Many women worry about engine failure or a flat tyre in an isolated area. Do not ignore scheduled maintenance and tune-ups, and make sure you have enough petrol at all times. When parking, ensure the area is well-lit and busy, and don't leave anything of value on display. Always lock all doors, windows and sun roof, even if you're only leaving your car for a short time. Have your keys ready when you return to your vehicle, and be aware of anyone in the vicinity. Check carefully that no-one is inside your car, lock the doors as soon as you get in and leave immediately. When driving, keep the doors locked and the windows closed, particularly in slow-moving traffic.
