Summer driving tips for young drivers

Ahh, summertime. Barbeques, holidays, sunbathing, swimming, road trips. If you're a young driver, you may not be aware that balmy summer weather does not necessarily mean optimum driving conditions. We've compiled a list of top summer driving tips to help you make the most of those long summer days.

Before you go

Summer holidays often mean driving longer distances than usual, so it is vital that you get your car serviced before you go. Pay special attention to the cooling system, tyres and air con system. Pack smart too, with plenty of cold water and snacks, and ensure that any gear on your roof rack is well-balanced and securely tied. You should make sure you have good vehicle insurance for your car, motorbike or van, just in case everything doesn't quite go according to plan (we offer cheap, competitive policies, just click here for a quote).

On the road

That glorious summer sun doesn't just melt your icecream - it can melt the road surface too or cause glare. Sunglasses are essential, but many people forget to apply or pack suncream. It is vital to avoid fatigue, so make sure you stop and have a rest if you're feeling drowsy. If you're towing a boat or trailer, pay attention to following distances and don't speed. Why not take the scenic route, if you're not in a hurry then smaller roads are far superior to a monotonous highway - just watch out for any hazards on country roads such as livestock! Take your time, be respectful to others using the roads, and try to make the journey as much fun as the rest of your holiday.
