4x4 drivers 'worst for law-breaking'
Fri, 23 Jun 2006
The poor public image of 4x4 drivers will not be done any favours this week, with the publication of a study finding that they are more likely than other drivers to flout driving laws on the use of mobile phones and seat belts.
According to the study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), drivers of 4x4s were nearly four times more likely to be using a mobile phone whilst driving, and where slightly more likely not to be wearing a seat belt.
The study surveyed cars driving in areas of west London to obtain their statistics.
The researchers argue that 4x4 drivers are actually in more danger of having an accident and claiming on their car insurance compared with other drivers, because they take more risks than other drivers due to feeling safer in their larger cars.
The findings may be worrying for car insurance providers, demonstrating that having a safer car does not necessarily mean a safer driver.
Speaking on your mobile phone whilst driving is known to significantly reduce your ability to focus your attention on the road, making the chances of an accident occurring significantly greater.
