A third of drivers ignore seatbelt rule
Tue, 24 Jan 2006
Around one third of motorists in the UK have not worn a seatbelt at some point while in a moving vehicle, highlighting the need for adequate car insurance.
Results of a survey by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that men and under-35s are the least likely to buckle up.
In addition, a large proportion of drivers are failing to familiarise themselves with basic driving rules and 72 per cent of motorists questioned had not re-read the Highway Code since passing their tests.
"Simple steps like reading the Highway Code, taking time to fit a child seat properly and checking tyres regularly could prevent many people from needlessly coming to harm on the roads," said SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan.
"Yet millions of motorists are guilty of taking safety for granted. The motor industry has a responsibility to drive this message home and every motorist should make it a 2006 resolution to do their bit," he added.
A new guide on responsible motoring Drive Green, Drive Safely containing advice on how to drive safely and in an environmentally-friendly way, has just been released by SMMT.
