AA warns motorists to keep keys safe
Tue, 22 Nov 2005
AA Insurance has offered a warning to motorists to keep their car keys safe at all times.
One car is stolen every minute in the UK, yet of those surveyed by the car insurer, a fifth said that they leave their keys unattended in the ignition while they warm up their cars in the mornings.
Cars stolen under such conditions will not be covered by the majority of car insurance policies, AA warns. Insurance companies can "legitimately" refuse to pay up.
Additionally, a third of British drivers said they leave their car keys near the front door of their property, making them easily available to passing thieves.
"Thieves are turning to more ingenious ways to steal keys such as hooking them off a hall table or key rack by 'fishing' through the letterbox, so keep keys well away from the front door," said Kevin Sinclair from the AA.
Motorists are therefore well advised to make sure car keys are stored in a safe place when not in use and that vehicles are not left unattended while the engine is running.
