A crook who stole a car at gunpoint in Wimbledon Village was given a 15-year jail sentence at Kingston Crown Court last week.
Simon Dunn, 34, pulled the gun at a policeman before forcing a man to his knees on Wimbledon High Street in September of last year, after which he stole the vehicle.
Police units in Richmond were alerted to the theft and managed to stop Mr Dunn, who was relieved of the handgun before being arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery, possession of a firearm with intent, car theft including the offence of driving without car insurance and intent to resist arrest.
"Dunn was a determined and ruthless criminal who, while in possession of a loaded handgun, threatened police officers and members of public in an attempt to escape," said detective chief inspector Martin Huxley from Barnes Flying Squad.
"I hope this case demonstrates the dedication of Metropolitan Police officers to capturing criminals and bringing them to justice."
Mr Dunn's sentence of 15 years without chance of parole was recommended on the premises that he was considered a serious danger to the public for being in possession of a handgun holding live ammunition.
