Beckham loses luxury car to thieves - again
Wed, 26 Apr 2006
David Beckham's car insurance premiums look certain to go up this week, after his £40,000 luxury BMW was stolen by luxury car thieves his second to be stolen in less than six months.
The car was taken by thieves from the underground car park of a shopping centre in the Spanish city of Madrid, where Beckham now plays his football.
Despite being fitted with the latest high-tech security systems, which included a PIN operated ignition, the culprits were able to make off with the car by using specialised computer software to get the engine started.
It is believed that a gang specialising in stealing luxury cars is behind the theft, with police estimating that an average of 50 top-of-the-range cars stolen every day in Spain's capital city.
The incident is indicative of a recent growth in organised gangs targeting luxury cars, often stolen to order.
Increasingly more inventive security measures from car manufacturers have help make car theft less likely, reducing the likelihood of that expensive car insurance claim.
However, it appears that the criminals are rising to the challenge, with increasingly inventive ways of breaking those security measures also being developed.
