British diesel market continues to soar

Wed, 07 Sep 2005

The British automotive market has seen the diesel sector continue to expand according to new figures.

With the market, swelling the prospect of a host of new drivers looking for cheap car insurance is looming, although overall new registrations were down.

The August market proved to be one of the smaller sales periods, dropping by 2.3 per cent.

On a yearly basis registrations were down by 5.7 per cent, with the year-to-fate unit total standing at 1,554,828.

In contrast the diesel market swelled by 10.7 per cent in August, prompting SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan to hail the "star" performance.

"As fuel prices soar, buyers are really switching on to its benefits and last month marked almost five consecutive years of diesel growth," he said.

"Cheaper motoring and greater model choice are just two of its selling points; better fuel consumption is also helping to lower average carbon dioxide emissions from the tailpipe."
