Brits 'should follow European example'

Mon, 30 Jan 2006

UK drivers should follow the example set to them by their European counterparts when it comes to road safety, experts have claimed.

Motorists in most other European countries are required by law to carry – in addition to a comprehensive car insurance policy - a warning triangle, spare bulbs, first aid kit, yellow jacket and fire extinguisher.

British drivers on the other hand are not required to carry any these items save car insurance documents, but it is claimed that many thousands of accidents each year could be prevented if they did.

Motorists are sometimes killed when they stop by the roadside and fail to use a warning triangle or wear a highly visible jacket, reports Motoring News Extra.

Those travelling by car to European ski resorts should also note that driving without snow chains is illegal in many countries and can result in an on the spot fine and possible suspension from entering the resort.
