Busy drivers willing to break the law

Mon, 24 Oct 2005

Motorists who are pushed for time are more willing to break the law in order to reach their destination than those who are in no rush, a survey has shown.

Research by Total UK found that nearly half of the motorists surveyed have parked on a double yellow line when pressed for time, and almost a quarter (24 per cent) have risked a fine and penalty points by breaking the speed limit.

More than a quarter were also found to have chanced driving on a near-empty tank when they have not had time to visit a petrol station, with the same amount admitting that they would park in a disabled space if none other was available.

"Longer working hours and hectic lifestyles mean time is now perceived as a valuable commodity," Total UK spokeswoman, Stephanie Lumley, told the Metro.

The suggestion that drivers now have less time to show care and consideration on the road carries heavy implications for accident rates, resulting in the possibility of an increased number of car insurance claims.
