Cabbies make the grade
Tue, 02 Aug 2005
Top Taxi certificates have been awarded to 20 cab drivers who have just completed a charm school that has hopefully taught them to be more customer friendly, according to The Scotsman.
The 16 men and four women took the short course in customer-care following accusations that Aberdeens taxi drivers were the rudest in Scotland.
Apparently, all sorts of complaints had been filed against the grumpy bunch, ranging from bad driving to sexual assault.
It was therefore decided that something had to be done to improve their public image, so the city council worked with the European Social Fund to promote and fund this initiative.
According to the Scotsman, the students completed classes in first aid, disability awareness, driver welfare and tourist information, and used customer feedback to improve their attitude.
I have learned a fair bit about what our customers expect from us, cabbie Ian Hamilton told the newspaper after graduating from charm school.
A number of car insurance companies are now offering policies that are specifically aimed at taxi drivers, but this is one of the few perks of a job that is becoming less and less desirable as social behaviour deteriorates.
