Calls for stop to "cowboy clampers"

Fri, 18 Nov 2005

Motorists in England and Wales are calling for an end to vehicle clamping by "cowboy clampers" on private land.

According to data from the RAC Foundation, around 94 per cent of drivers want to see regulations over clamping reviewed.

The Foundation is urging UK drivers to consider a nationwide ban on clamping and is urging that new legislation should include a strict code of conduct to prevent "cowboy clampers" from overcharging drivers.

Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, said: "We believe that the SIA licensing scheme must be reinforced by a legally enforceable code of practice, holding clampers to account."

The RAC's proposals come as the government announced its aim to cut down the number of motorists flouting driving and car insurance laws.

Under new proposals, UK drivers failing to pay parking fines, parking in areas illegally, or driving in bus lanes, could have their vehicles clamped or towed.
