Car insurance cost 'depends on region'
Thu, 27 Apr 2006
The amount you pay for car insurance varies hugely depending on where in the UK you live, according to new research.
Drivers in London pay an average of £563 a year, the highest in the country, while car owners in East Anglia get the best deal on average, paying around £329 a year, according to a Tesco car insurance survey.
The second most expensive region was the north west of England, where car insurance would cost you an average of £541, while Scotland and Wales are both well below the national average, with annual costs of around £335 and £365 respectively.
The average cost of car insurance for the UK as a whole was found to be £442.
London's increased congestion, combined with high levels of car crime, is generally accepted as the reason behind the much higher premiums in the capital.
More cars on the roads make the chances of an accident that much more likely, hence the greater cost of insurance.
Despite this, however, experts believe that the increasing competitiveness of the car insurance market should mean that shopping around can get you a much better deal, even in London.
