Cars to become 'mobile calming devices'

Mon, 23 Jan 2006

Volunteers are to be enlisted in a new fight against speeding motorists, it has been revealed.

A scheme organised by Doncaster Council is to use willing motorists as traffic calming measures, by getting them to block speeding drivers.

The Community Pace Drivers concept has been created in a bid to cut speeding on Doncaster's roads and if the move proves successful, it could help cut the costs of car insurance for local residents.

So far 30 people have already signed up as volunteers and they will be employed to drive at or below the speed limit on certain roads in a bid to reduce the number of speeding cars on the roads.

However, road safety campaign Speed Safe has criticised the idea, suggesting that it will cause more hazards on the road and will increase the dangers posed by overtaking and tailgating.

Paul Smith from the group claims that it could also lead to an escalation in road rage incidences and added: "Road safety works best when drivers co-operate together and adjust their speed to suit the hazard."
