Child passengers 'make driving safer'
Wed, 14 Jun 2006
Car insurance companies could soon be thinking about providing cheap car insurance for parents, after new research released today found that people drive in a safer manner when their children are in the car with them.
The research from a leading insurance provider surveyed drivers from across the UK, finding that 53 per cent of drivers have broke the speed limit with their children in the car significantly lower than the national average of 77 per cent.
Over 90 per cent of parents questioned said that they consciously drove in a safer manner when their children were passengers, both because they valued their children's lives and in order to set a good example to them.
This suggests that despite the annoyance that child passengers can sometimes cause to their parents, over all their presence seems to have a calming effect on drivers.
Indeed the statistics show that when there is a child in the car, driving is generally much safer and controlled, with fewer accidents and car insurance claims as a result.
