Clamping to be implemented on untaxed vehicles
Wed, 09 Nov 2005
Plans by the Lord Chancellor to take a selection of motoring offences outside of the court system have been announced.
Measures will be put in place to target uninsured motorists, as well as those driving without MOT. Wheel clamping is to be used to target untaxed vehicles in particular.
The RAC Foundation greeted the news with caution however, stressing that systems must be put in place to ensure that vehicles were not clamped due to bureaucratic mix-ups.
Vehicles not displaying a tax disk should not necessarily become instant targets, the Foundation argued. Consideration should also be given to the location of vehicles, as clamping might not always be a practical or safe option.
Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, said: "Most motorists will welcome the targeting of the motoring underclass who continue to drive with out tax, insurance or MOT.
"These one million or so motorists are more likely to be involved in accidents and hit and run incidents. Immobilising these vehicles will be a step in the right direction."
Divers should be warned that not taking out car insurance or renewing tax disks may result in tougher measures in the future.
