Congestion charge 'a success'
Fri, 30 Jun 2006
A Transport for London report has hailed the capital's congestion charge system as a success, with congestion levels reportedly down 22 per cent since the scheme was introduced four years ago.
Levels of pollution have also dropped, according to the transport agency's report, with air quality improving thanks to a fall in car emissions of around 15 per cent.
Road safety also appears to have improved, with accident rates down by between 40 and 70 incidents a year.
The congestion charge now £8 per car has also succeeded in attracting more people to other forms of transport, with car drivers, upset by another addition to their motoring costs, taking to buses or bikes.
Indeed, cycling rates in London have risen by some 43 per cent since 2002.
However, for those motorists who prefer to stick to the comfort and convenience of their own set of wheels, the added costs of driving in central London means that getting cheap car insurance is now more important than ever.
