Driver warning over bad posture

Tue, 23 May 2006

Your car insurance policy is sure to cover you in the event of sustaining injuries as a result of a collision, but what about the other kinds of injuries you could receive whilst driving?

According to a survey conducted by online auction site eBay Motors, some 14 million drivers in the UK are now suffering from what expert call Repetitive Driving Injury (RDI).

These injuries are caused over a long period of time by bad posture, a result of failing to set up the car seat properly to ensure adequate support for the back and head.

This can result in serious and long-term spinal, joint or muscle injuries, including back or neck pain and eye strain – conditions that need medical attention later in life.

According to the survey, the most common symptom of RDI is foot cramp, suffered by over 80 per cent of the driving population.

Commenting on the findings, Charlie Coney of eBay Motors said that drivers needed to be more aware of the importance of a comfortable driving position.

"Despite eight out of ten drivers having suffered from RDI´s, only one in five (21 per cent) consider car comfort an important factor when purchasing a car," he said.

"Choosing the car best suited to their driving style should be an increased priority for all car buyers to avoid these symptoms."
