Drivers 'apathetic' over breakdown cover

Wed, 05 Jul 2006

British motorists are becoming increasingly apathetic about car insurance, according to recent research, with over 80 per cent failing to seek out breakdown cover of any kind when getting their new insurance policy.

This is despite the fact that almost three-quarters of motorists are reported to have broken down at one time or another, with over 60 per cent admitting that they had to wait for over an hour at the side of the road before finally being given assistance, according to Prudential.

The main reasons reported for failing to get breakdown cover included believing that a breakdown would never happen to them (14 per cent), and just simply never getting round to it (12 per cent).

However, the expense of the cover was regarded as the biggest obstacle to getting covered, with nearly one-fifth of respondents citing this as their primary reason.

The drivers' survey also found that around a quarter of drivers have broken down between three and five times, while around four per cent have been unlucky enough to break down a massive ten times or more.
