Drivers getting less polite?

Tue, 02 May 2006

Older people have long been berating society for lack of manners shown in everyday life, but now research suggests that standards are slipping even on Britain's roads.

Research conducted by market researchers ICM found that standards of common courtesy among UK drivers are not what they were, with nearly half admitting that they often beep other drivers who annoy them, while one in 20 say that they sound their horn in frustration while stuck in traffic jams.

And it's not only the car horn that shows our bad manners.

One in five motorists surveyed admitted using disabled parking spaces without a legitimate need, while over one in ten said that they had nipped into a parking space while another driver was waiting for it.

Irritable or aggressive driving can become more serious, as road rage can lead to accidents and an expensive claim on your car insurance.

However, the survey also showed that almost all drivers in Wales and the south-east of England are grateful when other motorists are polite to them, with 97 per cent in these areas acknowledging a good deed of another driver.
