Drivers spend 3.4 years on the road

Mon, 26 Jun 2006

The average British driver spends around 3.4 years of their life behind the wheel of a car, new research suggests, demonstrating the central role that motoring now plays in many people's lives.

The survey, conducted by oil company Shell, shows that we spend an average of 9.2 hours a week driving – the equivalent of 478 hours over the year.

And over a life time, the average British motorist is estimated to clock up 640,286 miles at this rate, driving to and from work as well as those longer car journeys for holidays or business trips.

The survey also found that more than half of the 3,000 members of the public surveyed drove to work, with the average commuter clocking up 14.8 miles a day in the daily dash to the office and back.

And with many accidents on Britain's roads occurring during the busy commuting rush hours, the findings will make interesting ready for drivers and car insurance providers alike.
