FI breakaway less likely

Fri, 10 Mar 2006

As the Formula 1 season is about to roar into action in Bahrain this weekend, the threat that some manufacturers could leave for a rival competition is lessening.

Representatives from five of the top F1 manufacturers, forming the Grand Prix Manufacturers' Association (GPMA), are set to go into talks with the sport's head Bernie Ecclestone.

There had been talk of GPMA members creating a breakaway series for the 2008 season, but a unified competition now seems more likely.

A GPMA spokesman told Reuters: "We will of course meet with the commercial rights holder this weekend.

"Significant progress has been made and we hope to address several of the outstanding issues, but it's too early to predict any outcome.

"We don't want to speculate but things are moving in the right direction."

The GPMA is said to want a greater cut of the sport's massive profits plus a more open decision making process.
