'Got any car insurance sonny?'
Fri, 02 Dec 2005
A boy of two years old has been pulled over by police for not having any car insurance or relevant documentation.
Oliver Smith, innocently traversing the pavements of Leyland, Lancashire, with his grandfather, Derek Smith, was stopped doing two mph in a battery-powered toy car.
The PC informed the boy's grandfather that Oliver could face charges for not having the correct paperwork, and advised Mr Smith that new laws made having no tax, car insurance or MoT an offence.
The constable added that the miniature vehicle could cause damage to a parked car or pedestrian and issued an official verbal warning.
Oliver's father, Richard, said: "I am astonished that this officer took the time to pull over to say my boy needed tax and MoT."
When questioned, a Lancashire Police spokesperson confirmed that: "A child's toy car that can only travel about two mph does not come under the motor vehicle legislation."
He added that children were advised not to play near highways however, in case of an accident occurring.
