Greener drivers want grants
Wed, 24 May 2006
Motorists would welcome driving greener cars, with government grants and cheap car insurance the best incentives, new research has found.
A study carried out by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that over 90 per cent of drivers would be happy switching to greener cars, such as those that employ hybrid technology.
However, many said that they would need more incentive than just environmental concerns to make the change, with the issuing of government grants for greener car buying top of the wish list.
Many insurance companies have already begun to make driving greener cars more attractive to motorists concerned over the rising cost of motoring, offering cheap car insurance deals to drivers looking to insure new hybrid cars.
The Department of Transport has proposed providing grants to greener motorists, in an effort to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas produced by the UK, and the plan has been approved by European Union officials.
However, no timetable for its implementation has been scheduled.
